A sound soul dwells within a sound body and a sound mind.
Honestly, this is one of the more thought provoking lines that I have ever heard, and I discovered it in the opening of a Japanese anime. It’s amazing what gems can be found in cartoons isn’t it?
A sound soul seems like something everyone would want to have, but how do we get there? What do the terms sound mind and sound body actually mean?
Obviously, the key to a sound body is good diet, exercise, and lack of damaging vices. There are, of course, things that cannot be changed about our health. This does not mean, however, that we cannot strive to achieve the most sound body of which we are capable. Adding a variety of whole foods, plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, and making sure that the calories that we consume count are an easy place to start.
“But I can’t afford fresh fruits and vegetables!”
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this, and each and every time I am forced to reply “Bull manure!”
Of course you can! Seeds are inexpensive, and even in a small apartment it is possible to grow a few different veggies. I even know one lady who grows a pepper plant in her shower window.
Add walking to your daily routine. Even a little is better than none. Do a few minutes of yoga from YouTube (it’s free), take up jogging, jumping rope, belly dancing. Anything really as long as you do something.
Tip: Pick out something fun. If it feels like just another chore, you probably won’t want to keep doing it.
But how do you know if you have a sound mind?
The thing is that you don’t know. You can think so, or guess so, or even really think that you are crazy as a loon, but fret not! Here also is a key to success!
Secretly, it doesn’t matter. Each day is a new step in our journey. Perhaps one day we are more sound of mind than others. We may experience anxiety, or depression, or joy beyond measure; no day is exactly the same.
The important bit is that you keep trying. Meditate. Take up bonsai. Learn a new language, read a book, or take up knitting.
Make joy a daily practice. Learn to look at the small things around you with the wondering eyes of a child.
You are beautiful. You are worth so much. You can do this.
Be a sound soul.
